Five indie musicians that we fell for in 2016

These are those really cool artists that you learn about from someone who is slightly more hip than you. After all, these are also the musicians that mash-up Closer by The Chainsmokers and Kabira. #FOMO? We share the YouTube video links here.

VidyaVox


Vidya Iyer has been performing under her YouTube channel VidyaVox since 2015 and has garnered over 90 million views on her videos. Her adept fusion of genres and songs have made her extremely popular ever since her first collaboration with Shankar Tucker. The last video she uploaded only a month ago, a mash-up of The Chainsmokers’ Closer and Kabira from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, featuring Casey Beaves has been watched over 10 million times.

Mali


Former member of Chennai-based band Bass-in-Bridge, Maalavika Manoj has been performing since 2010, but has been playing solo since the band’s dissolution in 2011. A harmonious combination of folk, country and pop tunes, her first album, Deceptive, came out in 2013. Since then, Mali has collaborated with artists such as Sapta and Dualist Inquiry. She is currently underway on her second album Rush and performs regularly at music festivals, like NH7 Weekender.


Meera Shenoy


Performing live since 2011, Meera’s music can be best described as an eclectic mix of contemporary jazz, folk and blues that makes you want to pour a glass of wine, kick back and reminisce. One of her initial singles Spaghetti was an ode to her hatred of these “obese noodles” and a bad date. She can  fluently croon in English, Spanish and French, and is signed with Kadak Apple Records.

Kavya Trehan


Singer, model, actor and dancer, Kavya does it all. She is one-half of indie band Mosko. A blend of smooth acoustic and electronic sounds, the band has been successful on the gig circuit since 2014. She has been performing since she was 14 and has collaborated solo with artists like Nucleya and Gaurav Raina of B.L.O.T.


Sharvi Yadav


The girl from Noida made it huge when she auditioned for season two of Colors Infinity’s The Stage in 2016. Previously, she had been part of a jazz/rock band called Sylvia in 2014. She went on to win the competition by impressing the celebrity judges—Monica Dogra, Vishal Dadlani,Ehsaan Noorani and Devraj Sanyal. Since then, she has been working on an EP (an Extended Play or a compilation of songs, which is longer then a single but shorter than an album) and building a solo career.
