Can we chill about how the 13th Doctor on Doctor Who is a woman?

The internet went nuts earlier today, and not just because of Game Of Thrones giving us a great first episode for season seven. As it turns out, a little after the new episode of GOT dropped, BBC’s show Doctor Who announced who the 13th Doctor will be. In a refreshing reveal, the new Time Lord is a Lady – Jodie Whittaker will be the new Doctor on the show.

Of course, a lot of people were supremely thrilled by the reveal, some even sharing reaction videos and there’s a lot of happy screeching and oh-my-god involved. And we couldn’t be happier. Jodie Whittaker is a great actor, and Broadchurch was a great show (which was the first time we personally saw her).

But there’s been plenty of, and ununderstandable backlash to the new Doctor Who lead. And a lot of it comes from people who can’t seem to divorce themselves from the “tradition” that the Time Lord has always been played by a man.

A lot of people have outraged on Twitter, and have been met with very polite “calm down” and “Bye Felicia” replies to their disdain. A sizeable part of the Doctor Who fan base can’t digest the fact that the show has chosen a female lead and decided not to cast another man in the same role.

Aside from the pretty common sensical fact that the Doctor doesn’t have an ascribed gender or form and can be male or female or trans, or dog, as someone thought they’d point out, there’s a number of people who are dissing the choice because the think it panders to PC (Politically Correct) culture and not to the character of the Time Lord.

Other Doctor Who fans are hoping that this isn’t a decision that was taken because Jodie Whittaker is a woman, but because Jodie Whittaker can embody the characteristics of the Doctor, and be what the series needs right now.

But a large point of this that some have pointed out, and that we’d like to concur with too, is this:

We’ve really got to stop thinking it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us. Of course, it’s great that Doctor Who has decided that a time-travelling alien can have more than one gender. But at the same time, till we’re totally okay with having a normal reaction to it, like, “yay! Excited that the show is back with a new lead” than go, “woah! It’s a woman?! Who’d have thunk it?!”

Or, in short:

Enough said. We’ll be waiting to see you, Doctor.
