Diversity has always been a long-standing issue in the modelling world, and though we might like to believe that it has changed over time, there is still a lot of work left to be done. While the likes of Tyra Banks or Naomi Campbell might be the exception to the rule, it’s no secret that the representation of the black women has always been woefully inadequate, not only the catwalks but also on the bill-boards as well.
This is also exactly what Los Angeles based model, med student and fashion blogger Deddeh Howard has tried to depict through a photo series titled ‘Black Mirror’ which aims to bring attention to the need of diversity in the modelling world. Howard experienced the bias first hand when she was told by modelling agencies that though she had an amazing look, they couldn’t represent her as they already have a black model in their rooster; “It seemed as if one or two black models on the roster are enough to represent us all. When you are told that, trust me, it feels bizarre,” she later explained in her blog.
Deddeh, then teamed up with her partner and photographer Raffael Dickreuter to recreate several of the inspiring and iconic campaigns featuring Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Gisele and tried to show what they could look like with a black model. The results of course are gorgeous! Now more than ever, the fashion world needs to wake up and realise the beauty in diversity.
